Eat, Pray and Love....

A wonderful passage in Elizabeth Gilbert's book (page 61, lest I be accused of plagarism, which I learned is frowned upon) should be read by all....

"Generally speaking, though, Americans have an inability to relax into sheer pleasure. Ours is an entertainment seeking nation, but not a pleasure seeking one.... Americans work harder and longer and more stressful hours than anyone in the world today." She continued that "many Americans feel more happy and fulfilled in their offices than they do in their own homes" (citing the studies in support). A very sad statement about American culture, but sadly so true.

The author continues by noting that in Italy, there is a wonderful saying, "Il bel far niente" which means "the beauty of doing nothing."

"The more exqisitely and delightfully you can do nothing, the higher your life's achievement" in Italy. Very powerful statements and great insight.... Italy has pasta and good sense, among so many other delights. I may need to find a way to work a trip there into this sabbatical....
